How to tap a tempo

Follow a steady pulse
Listen for the underlying beat. Tap once per beat, rather than following every note or drum hit. You can also tap a rhythm you have in mind.

Keep tapping evenly
A number appears after at least four consistent taps. The estimate uses up to twelve recent taps and filters uneven intervals. Reset to start over.

Copy into your project
Copy BPM and use it as a starting tempo in your music software. Listen again to check that it follows the rhythm. This tool does not play a metronome or change audio.
Reading your BPM estimate
One beat every half second is 120 BPM
BPM counts beats per minute. Tapping once per second gives 60 BPM; twice per second gives 120 BPM. The displayed tempo follows the intervals between your taps, within a range of 20–400 BPM.
Your choice of beat matters
You might count the same rhythm as 70 or 140 BPM. Choose the pulse that fits your project. Human timing, a changing tempo, and syncopation can make the estimate move around. A decimal place does not guarantee precision.
