How to find the BPM of a song

BPM is beats per minute: how often the pulse you will work with lands. You can count it, tap along, or estimate it from a file on your device. The useful number is the pulse you will count in a project, not every subdivision you can hear.

What is BPM in music?

Beats per minute is a tempo measurement. If a steady pulse lands once per second, the song is 60 BPM. A pulse every half second is 120 BPM. A pulse about every 0.43 seconds is 140 BPM. The number does not tell you the time signature, and it is not the number of notes in a bar.

Producers use BPM to set a metronome, warp a clip, or match two recordings. DJs use it to align phrases. The same recording can be counted at two related speeds: 70 or 140, 85 or 170. Both can describe the rhythm. The one you want is the pulse you will actually count.

BPM is not musical key. Key is the home pitch. A drum loop can have a clear tempo and no key. If you also need harmony, use the guide to finding a song’s key after you have a pulse you trust.

Count the pulse you will use

  1. Find a steady passage. Skip rubato intros, spoken breakdowns, and fills that hide the grid. A verse, chorus, or four-bar loop is easier than the first beat of a live recording.

  2. Count “1, 2, 3, 4” with the kick or snare you feel. Use a clock or metronome for 15 seconds and multiply by four, or count for 30 seconds and double. A 15-second count of 30 pulses is 120 BPM.

  3. Try twice as often, then half as often. If 120 feels like you are rushing, count every other beat and compare 60. If 60 feels like you are dragging, count the faster pulse. Keep the number that matches how you will arrange or mix.

Tap along if you have no file

When the music is playing in another app, on a stage, or only in your head, tap the pulse instead of analyzing audio. The online BPM tapper measures the gaps between your taps. It does not hear the track, open a microphone, or read a YouTube or Spotify link.

Start with four steady taps, then keep going for 8–12 beats. Reset if you lose the pulse. A 70 BPM reading next to a 140 BPM feel usually means you tapped every other beat. Choose the count you will use; extra decimal places do not make a missed pulse correct.

Find BPM from an MP3 or WAV

If you already have the recording, the BPM detector estimates tempo from the rhythm in the file. Choose a local MP3 or WAV, at least four seconds, up to 40 MB and 10 minutes. Analysis runs in the browser; the audio is not uploaded.

  1. Drop the file and listen. Play a steady passage and count with the candidate. The number on screen is an estimate, not a tagged BPM written into the file.

  2. Compare Half and Double if the pulse feels twice as fast or twice as slow. Those buttons change the candidate, not playback speed. This site does not stretch, export, or “change” the song.

  3. Copy the checked BPM into your DAW and line the first downbeat against the metronome over several phrases. A constant offset is often a start-position issue. A growing offset often means the tempo still does not match, or the performance drifts.

Half time vs double time BPM

88 BPM in double time is 176 BPM; half of 88 is 44 BPM. These numbers describe different counting grids for the same audio. Changing the displayed BPM does not change playback speed or prove which pulse best fits the arrangement. Delay times for 88 BPM are on the BPM to milliseconds calculator.

Half time and double time are two ways of counting the same recording. In half time you feel the pulse half as often, so 140 BPM can be written as 70. In double time you count twice as often, so 70 can be written as 140. The audio does not have to speed up or slow down.

Hear 70 and 140 over the same rhythm

Both examples use exactly the same quiet, high click every 0.429 seconds. A lower accent marks the pulse to count: every other click at 70, or every click at 140. Count four lower accents, then compare the other version.

Each synthesized example lasts about 7 seconds. The underlying rhythm stays at the same speed; only the counting accent changes. No song is stretched or analyzed. Start with low volume.

The right choice is the grid you will work on. A hip-hop beat that hits hard on 1 and 3 may be easier at the slower number. A four-on-the-floor kick may be easier at the faster one. Copy one number, set the metronome, and listen for several bars before you lock a long session to it.

Some songs change tempo. A single BPM cannot describe a ritardando, a half-time breakdown that is a true speed change, or a live take that drifts. Export the section you need, or map tempo in your editor. This finder samples long files; it does not build a tempo map.
