2 Flats Key Signature: Which Keys Have Two Flats?
A 2 flats key signature means B flat major or its relative minor, G minor. The two flats are B flat and E flat, always in that order. Both keys rest on the same two signs, so the final note tells you which is which. Below: the two flats drawn and labelled, the scale notes for both keys, and the pitches you can check.
What 2 flats key means
B flat major and its relative G minor are written with two flats: B flat, E flat. These two flats are printed once after the clef and hold for the whole line unless an accidental cancels one of them.

How to read this signature
The flats of every key signature follow a single path: B, E, A, D, G, C, F. Two flats is just the first two steps of that path, and then it stops, at B flat and E flat.
Flats are added in the fixed order B, E, A, D, G, C, F, so a two-flat signature stops after the second step, E flat, and never reaches A flat.
B flat major and G minor rest on the same two flats, so the printed signs alone never reveal which of the two a piece is in.
Numbers you can check
The two flats sit at two measurable pitches: the tonic of B flat major, B flat 4 = 466.16 Hz, and of G minor, G 4 = 392.00 Hz (equal temperament, A4 = 440 Hz). Counting the accidentals on this signature gives two — B flat, E flat.
Equal temperament from A4 = 440 Hz sets any note n semitones above A4 at 440 × 2n/12 Hz; rerun that to verify the two tonic figures above.
Those frequencies are arithmetic. A separate reading of one recording is in the example: on 16 October 2026 the key finder called the opening of Bach’s B flat major prelude D minor at 42% confidence.
A recorded example you can check
Wikipedia’s The Well-Tempered Clavier article, read on 16 October 2026, heads Book 1 No. 21 as “Prelude and Fugue in B flat major, BWV 866”. The Open Well-Tempered Clavier score, MuseScore edition version 1.0 dated 19 March 2015 and marked CC0, prints two flats — B flat, E flat — between the clefs and the time signature on the first page of Praeludium 21. That is the same signature as G minor. The recording below is the opening of that prelude. The key name comes from the article; the two flats are what that page of the score prints.
On 16 October 2026 this site’s key finder read this 20-second clip as D minor, Camelot 7A, at 42% confidence, and labelled the reading low confidence. It listed B flat major (34%) and F major (8%) as the next two candidates, and the on-screen note says B flat major also fits. That percentage is the finder’s estimate for this file, not a measured accuracy rate. The article names the prelude B flat major; D minor is not the relative minor of these two flats.

What this page leaves open
- This page covers the printed two-flat signature; modulating out of it with accidentals is a separate topic.
- The tonic frequencies are computed in equal temperament, not measured from a performance.
- The enharmonic spelling of the same pitches (A sharp rather than B flat) is not treated here.
